AITSL review of the Teacher Standards

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is conducting the first formal review of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers since they were adopted 15 years ago. The review runs from May 2026 to February 2027, with an open initial online survey closing on August 7, 2026.
Review Purpose and Timeline
Goal: Check if the standards match modern, evidence-based teaching practices and remain useful.
Timeline: The teacher standards review takes place between May 2026 and February 2027; a separate review for the Principal Standard follows from September 2026 to May 2027.
Current Status: The existing standards stay active and unchanged while the review happens.
How to Participate
Consultation 1: An open online survey is available until August 7, 2026, targeting experiences and views from educators and the school community. [
Consultation 2: Later stages will feature a discussion paper and chances to give written submissions.
Who can join: Teachers, leaders, pre-service teachers, parents, and education groups. You can access details and complete the feedback process directly on the AITSL Review Page
National Survey Link
An online survey has been developed to gather valuable insights from the profession and the wider education community across Australia about their experiences with the Teacher Standards.
The survey is now open and will close Friday 7 August. The link below directs participants to the Review of the Teacher Standards webpage, where they can access further information about the review and complete the online survey.
Information Webinars
There will be repeated three (3) 30-minute information webinars during this consultation period. They will provide attendees with an overview of the review process. These are an ideal opportunity to introduce your colleagues to the Teacher Standards Review and have any clarifying questions about the process answered. The dates and times are below.
